For the second year in a row Jean Theoret ran away with the Chevrolet Cup at Seafair. There was a lot of pre-race milling for starting positions. and there was controversy. U-37 and U-10 were early in turn 1 in lanes 1 and 2, but U-1 cut through the infield near the turn to take lane 1 from U-37. U-10 moved to lane 3 and the rest of the field caught up. U-7 was in lane 4, U-3 in lane 5, U-6 in lane 6, and U-5 trailed as required. U-3, U-6, and U-10 led the field across the line, but U-37 led coming out of the turn. Coming into that corner, U-7 went dead and coming out of the corner , U-3 also went dead. U-37 took a one roostertail lead over U-10, closely followed by U-6. U-1 trailed in fourth position. All the boats were light down the backstretch. By the end of lap, U-37 led by two roostertails. U-7 restarted and rejoined the field.
During lap 2 ,a one lap penalty was announced on the U-10. The field stretched out. At the end of the lap, U-37 led U-10 by three roostertials, and U-6 was 1/2 a roostertail behind U-10. U-1 trailed U-6 by 1 1/2 roostertails. Further back U-5 was in fifth and U-7 was in sixth.
At the end of lap 3, U-37 led by a half a straightaway. The order on the water remained the same. The U-10 did an extra lap to place sixth. The final order of finish for the checkered flag was U-37, U-6, U-1, U-7, U-5 and U-10.
U-3 did not restart. In the first turn, it went into U-6's roostertail. The water broke the canard, damaged the right spar, and knocked off the right side of the turbocharging system.
