The 2007 APBA Gold Cup was held July 13-15 in it's semi-permanant home, Detroit, Michigan. The place is a photographer's dream with 200 mph Unlimited hydroplanes going past a few hundred feet away. Accompanying the Unlimited Hydroplanes on the bill this year were Offshore boats, 5-liter and GNH hydros, an enormous vintage fleet, and the wierd, inflatable Superlight tunnels. High winds on Saturday prevented any hydroplane competition, but the Offshores and Superlights kept the crowd entertained. The cancellation of most of Saturday's activities made for a full day of racing on Sunday, with competition kicking off mid-morning. Much to my relief, the usual high heat and humidity were replaced by comfortable temperatures in the high seventies, and heats ran back-to-back, with barely a break. Racing proceded without a hitch, untill the Unlimited's Final heat, when Mike Allen in the U-1, 'Miss Formula Boats .com' blew over on the front-chute. Mike was transported to the local hospital, but was reportedly in good condition, suffering only a complication to a previously broken thumb. The re-running of the final saw Dave Villwock in the U-16, 'Miss Elam-Plus' take the lead early and bring home his sixth Gold Cup, and third win of 2007.
Here is presented a gallery of Unlimited Hydros. Galleries of Limited hydroplanes, Offshore boats, and a few Superlights will follow, though not necessaraly in that order. Enjoy.
